How To Cut Parts Out Of The Video
Overview
When creating sermon clips in Sermon Shots, you have full control over what content appears in your final video. You can easily cut out sentences, phrases, or individual words that you don't want included in your clip—without having to re-upload or re-edit your entire sermon.
This feature is especially helpful for:
- Removing filler words or pauses
- Cutting out off-topic tangents
- Shortening clips to fit time limits
- Removing sensitive or out-of-context statements
- Creating cleaner, more focused content
All editing happens in Step 2 of the clip creation process.
Where to Edit: Step 2 - Select Subtitles
After choosing your template in Step 1, you'll move to Step 2: Select Subtitles. This is where you can:
- See your entire sermon transcribed into sentence blocks
- Add or remove sentences from your clip
- Edit words within those sentences
- Move words between sentence blocks
3 Methods to Cut Content from Your Clips
Method 1: Remove Entire Sentences (Using Plus and Minus Signs)
Each sentence block has two buttons:
- Plus sign (+) in black = Add this sentence to your clip
- Minus sign (-) in red = Remove this sentence from your clip
How to remove a sentence:
- In Step 2, look at the sentence blocks on the right side of your screen
- Find the sentence you want to cut out
- Click the red minus sign (-) next to that sentence block
- The sentence will be unselected and will NOT appear in your clip
- The video portion for that sentence will also be cut out
How to add a sentence back:
- Click the black plus sign (+) next to an unselected sentence block
- The sentence will be added back into your clip
Method 2: Remove Words from Captions Only
If you want to remove a word from the caption text but keep it in the audio/video:
- In Step 2, find the sentence block with the word you want to remove
- Click directly on the specific word in the text box
- Delete the word from the text block
- The word will disappear from the caption display but will still be in the audio
Method 3: Cut Words Out of the Clip Completely
If you want to cut specific words out of both the captions AND the video/audio:
- Identify the words you want to remove – Click on the word blocks in your selected sentence
- Drag and drop the words – Move those word blocks into an unselected sentence block (a sentence block with a plus sign, not a minus sign)
- The words are now cut out – Those words will be removed from both the captions and the actual video
Step-by-Step Example: Cutting Out a Few Words
Let's say you have this sentence: "There have been moments in your life that God could have stopped the storm, but he didn't."
And you want to remove the phrase "in your life" from the clip completely.
Here's how:
- Go to Step 2
- Find the sentence block with that sentence
- Click on the words "in your life"
- Drag those words into an unselected sentence block below
- The clip will now say: "There have been moments that God could have stopped the storm, but he didn't."
- Click Next to move to Step 3 and see your updated clip
Work in Step 2
All content selection happens in Step 2. You cannot cut out sentences or words in Step 3 (the editing interface).
Preview Your Changes
After making changes in Step 2, click Next to go to Step 3 and preview your clip. If you need to make more changes, go back to Step 2.
Sentence Block Limits
Your clip can only be up to 2 minutes and 30 seconds long. Keep this in mind when selecting sentences.
Natural Flow
When removing words or sentences, make sure the remaining content flows naturally and makes sense in context.
Save Your Work
Changes save automatically every 5 seconds in Step 3, but you can also manually click "Save Changes" to ensure your edits are saved.
Troubleshooting
Problem: My changes aren't showing up in Step 3
Sometimes edits don't save properly. If this happens:
- Go back to Step 2
- Remove the sentence block with the incorrect word (click the red minus sign -)
- Go to Step 3 and wait for it to finish rendering
- Go back to Step 2
- Correct the word and add the sentence block back (click the black plus sign +)
- Go to Step 3 and wait for it to finish rendering
This forces the clip to recompile with your edits.
Problem: I can't drag words between sentence blocks
Make sure:
- You're in Step 2 (not Step 3)
- You're dragging word blocks into an unselected sentence block (one with a plus sign, not a minus sign)
- Your browser is up to date
Problem: I accidentally removed a sentence I wanted to keep
Use Undo:
- Windows: Press Ctrl + Z
- Mac: Press Cmd + Z
This will restore your previous edits.
Best Practices
- Plan ahead – Review your sermon transcript before creating clips to identify what you want to include or exclude
- Keep it natural – When cutting words or sentences, make sure the remaining content flows smoothly
- Test your clip – Always preview your clip in Step 3 before downloading to ensure it looks and sounds right
- Use for clarity – Cut out filler words, pauses, or tangents to make your message clearer and more impactful
- Maintain context – Be careful not to remove content that changes the meaning or context of your message
